HEIC to JPG on Mac: Preview Export and a Before-Upload Checklist

On a Mac, open the HEIC photo in Preview, choose File → Export, select JPEG, and save a separate copy. Reopen the exported image before sending it or uploading it to a form.

This guide is for a photo you already have as a file on your Mac. It uses Apple's built-in Preview app; MoaWiki does not receive the image. A folder managed by a cloud-sync service may still sync your files according to that service's settings.

Convert one photo with Preview

  1. In Finder, open the photo with Preview. If another app opens by default, use Open With → Preview.
  2. Choose File → Export and select JPEG from the Format menu.
  3. Adjust the quality control if needed. Save with a new filename or into a separate destination folder.
  4. Open that exported copy and inspect it before sharing.

If the format you need is absent, Apple documents holding Option while opening the Format menu to reveal additional formats. For several images, open them in one Preview window and select the desired images in its sidebar before exporting. These steps follow Apple's Preview conversion instructions; menu details can vary by macOS version.

Make a small delivery folder

A separate output folder makes it easier to tell the source from the file you intend to send. Here is an invented example for a three-photo application:

application-photos/
  originals/
    front.HEIC
    side.HEIC
    label.HEIC
  ready-to-upload/
    front.jpg
    side.jpg
    label.jpg

Do not delete the originals after seeing only the first successful export. Check all required photos, especially if two source files have similar names. A useful naming pattern is the subject plus its role, such as desk-front.jpg, rather than a sequence you cannot distinguish later.

Check these five things before uploading

CheckWhat to look atWhat to do if it fails
Correct imageCompare the subject with the originalExport the intended source again
OrientationRead a sign or inspect an upright objectCorrect the orientation and inspect the new copy
Important detailZoom into small text or the relevant areaTry a higher-quality export from the original
File requirementCompare the actual file size and dimensions with the destination's rulesChange only the setting needed to meet those rules
CompletenessMatch each requested view with a file in the delivery folderAdd missing views before submitting

For example, a form might ask for a photo below a particular size. Read that form's current limit instead of relying on a universal “web image” setting. Try one export, compare its size with the limit, and check whether its important details remain readable. Keep the accepted copy separate from rejected attempts.

For a batch, count files as a first check, then match the filenames and contents. Three output files do not establish that you exported the right three photos.

Common questions

Can I rename .heic to .jpg?

Renaming changes the filename, not the image encoding. Export the image into the required format instead. A file that merely has a different extension may still be rejected by the destination.

What if the JPEG looks blurry?

Compare it with the original at the same viewing size. Inspect the part that matters for your use, such as a product label. Export a fresh copy from the original with a different quality setting and compare the two. Do not repeatedly overwrite your only source while experimenting.

What if Preview cannot open my file?

First verify that the file finished copying or downloading and that the source device can open it. An incomplete transfer is a different problem from choosing an export format. This guide assumes Preview can open the source; it does not provide a repair procedure for damaged files.

Does a JPEG export meet every upload requirement?

No. The destination may also impose dimensions, file-size limits, or content requirements. Use its current instructions and verify the actual output rather than treating a successful export as approval.

If your next task involves documents, see our PDF-to-Markdown review checklist. For spreadsheet identifiers that change during import, use the CSV leading-zero checklist.
